What is Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone produced by Pancreas. This gland weighing about 3 to 4 ounces in the grown-ups is situated below the stomach on the back side. There are Islands of tissue of more than million minute cells called Islets of Langerhans in 5% part of the Pancreas. In each Islet of Langerhans, there are again Alpha, Beta and Delta cell tissues. The hormone produced by the Islets of Langerhans is as follows. They produce a hormone called Glucagon which increases the percentage of sugar in the blood. Beta cells: They produce Insulin. Delta cells: They produce a hormone called Sometostatin. Sometostatin: This obstructs the release of Insulin. These Islets of Langerhans are spread all over the Pancreas but, are thicker in the tail part of the gland. The production of the hormones is controlled by automatic nervous system called Celiac Plexus. Celiac Plexus – located in the lower abdomen – which works independently when there is plenty of blood supply.
